The pilot project on “Community Approaches to Flood Management” was kicked-of in November 2002 with the South Asia Regional Associates of GWP, and at the end of the main implementation phase of the pilot project, Community Flood Management Committees (CFMCs) have been established in selected communities (three in India and two each in Bangladesh and Nepal) and manuals describing specific activities for community based flood management have been prepared and translated into local languages. During the monsoon season in 2004, the manuals were field-tested, and found to be extremely useful to reduce loss of lives and property in the communities covered by the pilot project. At the same time a draft strategy for Community Based Flood Management has been developed. The pilot project has been carried out by Bangladesh Unnayan Parishad (BUP), Bangladesh; Institute for Resource Management and Economic Development (IRMED), India; and Jalsrot Vikas Sanstha (JVS), Nepal.

Share your experiences on Community Approaches to Flood Management
APFM provides a platform to share experiences in integrated flood management. Through this platform it is our endeavour to encourage and enable the involvement of local communities in various stages of flood management with a view to further develop and promote communities action in flood prone areas.
The APFM therefore invites various actors (both non-governmental/civil society and governmental) involved in activities that promote community action for flood management to share their experiences. You are invited to post relevant materials or information on your activities and your organizations to the APFM, Technical Support Unit (apfm@wmo.int).
