Case Studies
A number of case studies on flood management were, and are being, collected from various regions of the world, based on the experiences of organizations active in flood management. The main objectives in collecting these case studies are to:
- Identify the extent to which flood management has been carried out within the context of IWRM;
- Understand shortcoming in current flood management practices worldwide;
- Extract lessons learned and good practices in Flood Management;
- Catalogue the policy changes required to support IFM; and
- Identify the institutional changes required to achieve IFM.
The complete text of each case study can be downloaded by clicking the country in the above map. The complete text, extended summary and synopsis of each case study from the list of the countries shown below also can be downloaded.

Synopses of case studies The synopses were produced to extract the essence of each case study containing a brief description of flood management in the location, the relevance of the case study to the various aspects of IFM and the potential for the practices mentioned in the case studies to be replicated in other locations.
Overview situation paper on flood management practices The Overview Situation Paper (OSP) is based on material contained in 19 case studies collected on flood management practices and on findings and recommendations resulting from a review process of the case studies undertaken by a number of external specialists from various fields.
Based on the case studies, the OSP provides: an overall synopsis of floods, their nature, type and magnitude of damages caused; an overview of existing trends and approaches to flood management such as national policies, instruments, and organizational response for flood management; and the lessons learnt from current flood management practices. The paper also contains findings on the identified drawbacks and gaps in existing practices with respect to IFM and recommendations for the approaches required to be adopted for putting in to practice the IFM concept.
