Should we be merely talking about the long-term integrity of our hydraulic structures? Or should we be using the term to characterize an approach aiming for a long-term increase of the productivity of flood plains? What are the the parameters that can be used to characterize the sustainability of flood management?
FLOOD RISK REDUCTION
Fri, 04/09/2010 - 18:50 — GS RadjouMY COMMENT IS ABOUT THE FLOOD RISK REDUCTION
There are various hazards in the world that could create a risk (War, technology,..)
For instance in the food and water sectors. Hazards are classified as Physical, chemical and biological according to hazard sources (origins).
Anyway, how variable they are, they have common grounds in their consequences or causes.
The best reality to understand and reduce the flood risk, my viewpoint would to use an appropriate package of solutions that deals with the physical geography and the human Geography. No disasters are the same. If a bomb blasts and kills 50 people. It is sad. If it kills 1000 people it is very sad. I think in the last case it is a real disaster.
Sustainability and the supply chain
Tue, 04/06/2010 - 14:33 — GS RadjouToday, I believe that making sand from oil is not really sustainable. It may be less harmfull to use oil from sand from a customer viewpoint. However, extracting oil from sand is never a sustainable process.
Also, if you cut trees on national parks and replace them with trees for the purpose biofuel production. It is unsustainable, also.
Sustainable committees or development groups/peers decide the sustainability of the process. Is it fair? Is there less pollutions? is there a social justice and an economic value?...
Also, with globalization, organizations going global cannot escape their responsibilities at national levels and the CSR.
To exercise the rights for a sustainable process, the supply chain has to be sustainable from supplier steps to final customer step.
Sustainability for flood management
Wed, 07/29/2009 - 17:04 — GS RadjouIf I trust the landscape architects, sustainable flood management would be to manage rooms for the flood and organise urban spaces in order to accept the water expansion.
I think one should build less walls and impervious surfaces and dig more ponds, water waste treatment, building on elevation points, lift or electrical cable transports (hills...)at bay of flood. Also, building more environmentally friendly with houses on pillars. Floodplains are a source of wealth and dangers. There are risks like in any business, I think the aboves are one way to balance them. Now, there are also, global warming, which is another issues especially for coastal nations.
